Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to some of the common questions about the Japanese N4 Course:

The N4 level is the intermediate level in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). It covers more complex grammar, vocabulary, kanji, and listening skills compared to N5, and enables learners to understand everyday conversations in Japanese. N4 is a stepping stone toward the advanced levels of Japanese.

The JLPT N4 exam consists of three sections:

  • Vocabulary (Goi): Knowledge of kanji and words (around 300 kanji and 1,500 words).
  • Grammar and Reading (Bunpo and Dokkai): More advanced grammar, verbs, adjectives, and reading comprehension.
  • Listening: Conversations with faster speed and more informal expressions.

To pass the JLPT N4 exam, you need to achieve a minimum score of 90/180. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Vocabulary and Grammar: 38/120 minimum to pass
  • Listening: 19/60 minimum to pass
Both the section-wise and overall minimum scores must be met to pass the exam.

JLPT N4 is significantly more challenging than N5 as it introduces complex grammar, verb forms, and more kanji. N4 requires a deeper understanding of the language, including the ability to read longer passages, engage in conversations, and listen to faster-paced dialogue.

To prepare for the JLPT N4 exam:

  • Study around **300 kanji** and **1,500 vocabulary** words.
  • Master complex grammar, including polite and honorific forms, as well as sentence structures.
  • Listen to Japanese audio, such as podcasts and anime, at a faster speed.
  • Take practice exams to measure your progress and focus on areas needing improvement.
Consistent practice with grammar, vocabulary, and listening skills is essential for passing N4.

The JLPT N4 exam is held twice a year, usually on the first Sunday of July and December, in Japan and many other countries. You can check specific exam dates and registration information for your location on the official JLPT website.
