Learning Japanese – a deep dive!

B1 Exam Pattern | Learning Japanese – a deep dive!

This language is primarily spoken in Japan but also in many parts of Korea, England, Canada, Brazil, and the Philippines, Taiwan. Around 128 million people speak Japanese. An enormous number, right?

Hence, it makes even more sense to learn it as there are so many job opportunities as well as aspects to learn about a new culture which is totally different from the Indian or the Western Culture as we know.

Acquiring a foreign language as a skill is like deep-sea diving, everytime you jump in the depths, you will face new challenges.

It is pretty obvious that your first day starts with knowing your equipment, the science & probably diving in and learning how to breathe underwater, remember how it went with Hritik, Abhay & Fahran at Costa Brava with Katrina?

In deep sea diving you need to train with different equipment at different depths, similarly, you need to go through different levels while learning Japanese, it is divided into levels like N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1.

Yes, in this case the levels go in a reverse order, N5 to N1! N5 being the starting point, while N1 is like diving in the Mariana Trench.

We will leave the deep sea diving part here, to read more about it follow,

Learning Japanese Level N5

N5 being the foremost and the basic level. It includes an introduction to the language and one of the most important things, Script

Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji and Romaji are the scripts.

Hiragana and katakana are the alphabets in the language and mostly misunderstood to be the difficult part, but in our opinion it has to be Kanji.

Once you are familiar with the script, they teach the basic greetings and phrases. It’s important for a learner to know the language’s intonation and sound.

With the basic vocabulary and grammar you are all set to ask questions and answer the same, make requests, ask for permissions, talk about food, weather, making plans with friends, likes, dislikes and preferences.

How long does it last?

It is a language that requires you to invest your time, patience and efforts. It is time consuming as it’s new and includes many aspects. The maximum duration for the course should be at least 100 hours.

Which book to use?

Since it’s the first level, one needs a structure or a path to follow. A textbook is one of the best companions to begin the journey with. The most common reference book is minna no nihongo. It’s a systematic book that includes grammar, vocabulary, kanjis, exercises, short passages and short dialogue to practice listening and speaking.

We hope we could help you understand the N5 level meaning, content, duration and reference material used.
